News Category - Traffic Offences Criminal Law and Traffic Offences 19 December 2019

Double demerits commence in NSW and the ACT at midnight 20th December 2019 and will be enforced for 13 days, ending midnight 1st January 2020.

The double demerit schemes in Australia aim to encourage safe driving on long weekends and public holidays to ensure the safe arrival of all road users.

The following offences are subject to double demerits:

  • Drink or drug driving
  • Failing to wear a seatbelt and child restraint
  • Running a red light
  • Speeding
  • Illegal use of mobile phone whilst driving

If you're traveling Interstate it's worth knowing the slight differences in the scheme across Australia:

  • The double demerit scheme in WA extends for a slightly longer period than in NSW and the ACT, running from midnight  20th December to midnight 5th January.
  • In QLD, the double demerit scheme applies to drivers who commit an offence in the same group of offences more than once in the same12 month period.
  • VIC, SA, NT, and TAS do not have a double demerits scheme.
